BPO or Business Process Outsourcing, having taken the world by storm, is now giving way to the more suave KPO - Knowledge Process Outsourcing. The fundamental difference between BPO and KPO is that while business process outsourcing mainly deals with customer care and technical support through voice or data communications, transaction processing, telemarketing, etc., KPO is off-shoring of information intensive processes that require consultants having specialized domain expertise. Outsourcing consultants work involves handling high-end processes like valuation, researches, patent filing, legal and insurance claim, etc.
Outsourcing consultants is a strategic initiative taken by organizations to reduce costs and access intellectual resources not available in-house. As human capital costs keep spiraling in developed countries, companies are looking for new avenues in order to boost their revenues. Nowadays, outsourcing has become a prominent business practice in which companies contract all or part of their development needs to offshore consultants, usually from developing countries such as India, Brazil, Russia, etc. The rise of the Internet has further opened new avenues for freelance consultants, especially for ones from lower income countries.
The global outsourcing market is growing at a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of over forty percent, and is expected to cross US $50 billion by 2010. India is going to be the major beneficiary, and is likely to earn $30 billion by providing high-end knowledge intensive services. Outsourcing potential is not just limited to technology services, but can also be applied in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, financial analysis, engineering, and management consulting.
However, despite the initiatives the results obtained can often be substandard, if the organizations lack a clear and well-defined outsourcing strategy. To attain the expected results, outsourcing consultants work needs to be implemented properly. The senior management and project team must work together to manage the general risks in a way that does not impairs or jeopardizes the company's long-term business. Typically, the outsourcing consultants should get involved with the senior management early in their discussions to review the opportunities and mitigate the risks. Examples of the general risks may include: In-house employees reacting negatively to the offshore consultants or the outsourcing scope not clearly articulated.
